Memory Tapes - Seek Magic

It has been SO LONG since I've done this! Like ages! And I love sharing music! So I decided to be spontaneous and upload three sort of short albums instead of one big album. And they all fit roughly into the same genre, so it works out great. Anyway - all of these are what you would call "synth-pop", I guess. But they're also glam and lo-fi and electronic and a bunch of other things. Suffice it to say, they just sound old. Like old demo cassettes you find in your dad's briefcase from 1971 old. And I won't bore you with the details, but I WILL say that 'Washed Out' is by far the best album of the three, so pay special attention to that one. Let me know what you think, too! Positive, negative, I would love to hear it! These have been playing non-stop on my ipod, I'm sort of obsessed.

I tried to do this in sort-of chronological order, but I don't really have any specific episodes to define a linear progression. So. Anyway, I hope you like!

I love Joseph Gordon Levitt. LOVE HIM. Especially in cardigan sweaters and business suits and being romatic. I also love Zooey Deschanel, she's adorable. So - a picspam.

I kind of hate these. I was trying to be experimental and not be stuck in some kind of rut, so I ended up doing all kinds of crazy weird stuff. And I don't really like the results, but I can't make all of that work in vain. Anyway :\

I haven't been around so...I'm sorry. Life has actually been busy, like busier than usual. But I have exciting stuff to share.

I'm actually making this entry un-friends only because I feel this needs to be shared with more than just my friends. Everyone needs to see the gloriousness of Obama (and I realize that 'gloriousness' is not a word).

The rally was pretty much amazing. I showed up at 12:30 PM, 6.5 hours before he was even supposed to be there. And I got a really awesome spot, maybe 25 feet from Obama. It's estimated that 35,000 people showed up to the rally so, yeah - I'd say good seats. AND I HAVE PICTURES AND VIDEOS AND STUFF.

What would it take, what would it take to make you learn? And what would it take, what would it take to make you listen?

So, if you were to take these two albums and play them one after the other, you would think they were completely different bands. I actually thought that the first album ("The Cold Nose") was by a different band with the same name initially, and I was only convinced after reading Wikipedia. But no, they're not two different bands, they just made some massive changes in between the two albums. The first album is a lot rougher, more electronic, and a lot less cohesive. But it's still a really beautiful, ambient album. Some tracks are slow and kind of mellow, others are smooth and have an electric sheen to them, and still others are jangly and almost sort of ugly. But the bizarre noises and the fact that the tracks don't cooperate make it fascinating, and lend to its beauty. It seems like the band wasn't sure what its initial direction would be, in terms of picking a genre or even blending genres together. There's a darkness to it, but also a softness. That's the only way I can really describe it. However, In Ear Park is the much more popular and well-known sophomore effort. I think adding a band member from Grizzly Bear helped refine the genre they were aiming for, while also lending to their credibility and publicity as a band. The sound on the album is a lot cleaner, but also a lot less experimental, so it gives and it takes. I love them both, though, so take your pick - or take both. I would love to know what anyone/everyone thinks - positives and negatives!

Is it all as it seems
So unresolved, so unredeemed
If I remain, how will I know?

And it's been so long, that I can't be sure
And it's been so wrong
Right now, so wrong

While the world stood still around us
We drove, dreamless, lost and found again
Around towns, adrift and nameless,
Thrown in mad arrangements,
Bruised with orange light

This could be the end of the world,
Smoking curls and the screaming bells
When I awoke, I couldn't tell

Okay, so it's been quite a dry spell for me in terms of new music. To be honest, I haven't been hunting; I've been busy. It's kind of like I've been slowly starving, and then I found a really huge, really good meal out of nowhere - and they're called Le Loup. I found this bound through recommendations on Last.fm. Supposedly they sound like Animal Collective, but I really don't think so. They're sound is more like Grizzly Bear, Death Cab for Cutie, and Fleet Foxes all melted together. They have an innate warmth to them, but they also throw all this electronic shit into the mix that sounds amazing and whimsical and not quite so serious. It's almost like finding two weird foods that you would never think taste good together, but they do, and they taste way better than when they're by themselves.

I've been trying to sum up their sound in my mind, in one word, for a few days now. I think I've finally found it - "spiritual". At first I thought they sounded a little church-ish, but that wasn't it. They sound spiritual - native and natural - almost tribe-like. I can't describe why they sound this way, because it's too subtle for me to pinpoint, but it's the feeling that I get. Also, their lyrics are incredibly poetic and beautiful and serious. They're soft and relaxing, but they won't sedate you or put you to sleep, and they've managed that through adding in some edgier guitar riffs and little electronic touches. It's a weird mix, but they manage to marry it well.

Sounds like: Grizzly Bear, Death Cab, Postal Service, Fleet Foxes, electronics and banjos, softness and thrills and literature

Genres: Freak folk, electrofolk, indie, folk

Oh - and my favorite song is 'We Are Gods! We Are Wolves!' It's fucking amazing. I'd love to know what you guys think.

Most of these are pretty old but I still like them. Btw Local Ad is my favorite episode of Season 4. It's just...so great.

won't you drive my favorite fetish?
won't you call me names of animals?

And take you to the seventh heaven

This album is really weird, like I don't know how to feel about it. I mean, I feel good about it, but it's kind of cliche and it borrows from a lot of other genres and I don't know. It's like this retro sixties-ish kind of feel, but with a lot of electronic shit thrown in for good measure. They're also Swedish, so you can be guaranteed that they don't really sing about things that make sense. But I love the guitar riffs and how fun and sweeping it is. It's playful and just a tad silly without being trivial or too sweet. It also has dark undertones, kind of a noir film/mystery feeling, which makes it more dynamic than just zany pop music. The last track ("Adore Toi") is kind of my favorite if only for the simplicity of it. It's really reminiscent of some early Beatles stuff and it just makes you feel warm and fuzzy and I love it. The genres that they're treading make them very unique and undefinable, which is of course my favorite genre (yes, "undefinable" is a genre). Their voices are really attractive and pleasant too, lending to that sixties boyband vibe. Do I love this album as much as Fleet Foxes? No. But it's still awesome, kind of old, and way under the radar.

Sounds like: The Shins, The Beatles, The Beach Boys (?), Electropop mixed with Retro Britpop, Folk, Folk Rock, Electrofolk (?)

So yeah, I have Lost thoughts that I never completely put together. While I'm not as in love with Lost as I once was, I still have a special place for it in my heart. I started watching it when it first started, and I was only 16 years old. I was instantly obsessed. And now, four years later, after 34534534 questions unanswered and fifteen layers of mythology and thousands of character deaths, I'm still watching.
